Established in 1985, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda is housed in the former St. John’s Courthouse, a historic building constructed in 1750, thought to be the oldest in the town. Designed by renowned architect Peter Harrison, who is celebrated for his works in both the United States and the West Indies, the courthouse shares its legacy with landmarks like Mansion House in New York City and the Spanish Town Statehouse in Jamaica. The courthouse originally hosted the Court of Justice on its ground floor, while the upper floor served as meeting rooms for the Legislative Council and Assembly.
